Netfilx has got everyone obsessed with serial killer films with its latest Jeffry Dahmer. But this genre has so much more to offer. These are my absolute favourite serial killer films. Tense, scary, disturbing - the best films telling the stories of the world's worst serial killers.

#1 Silence of the Lambs (1991)

This one needs little introduction... if you haven't watched Silence of the Lambs yet - clear your diary for tonight. This film arguably defines the serial killer genre, and it sets the bar very high. Following an FBI agent who works with an imprisoned serial-killer to build a psychological profile of another one on the loose. A must-watch.

#2 Zodiac (2007)

Based on the true story of the Zodiac killer in Clarifornia in the late 60s. A masterpiece starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. Beautifully shot and acted

#3 Se7en (1995)

Starring Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt, two detectives following a gruesome killer that commits murders according to the seven deadly sins. It's sad, and a bit old, but the fast-paced story and exceptional final act make it one of the all-time best.

#4 American Psycho (2000)

It may not be a true story, but it is nevertheless an absolute classic of the genre. Shedding light on the disturbing behaviour of a complete psychopath through everyday life, along with bloody homicidal episodes and plenty of dark comedy. Truly unsettling, but a must-watch

#5 Memories of Murder (2003)

A South-Korean film directed by Bong Joon-Ho (who brought us the recently acclaimed Parasite). It revolves around the story of South Korea's first confirmed serial killer. Two sloppy, inexperienced local cops are tasked with finding the killer in this complex, powerful, and sometimes hilarious rendition.

#6 Monster (2003)

An incredibly sad crime drama following a sex worker who becomes a serial killer after struggling to leave the industry. Charlize Theron's oscar-winning performance is astounding. It's intense and painful, eloquently highlighting the psychological transformation of its main character.

#7 The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

An amazing neo-noir psychological thriller. Not exactly about serial killers, but very much adjacent to the genre, and I thought it deserved a spot on the list. A journalist and a computer hacker search for a woman that has been missing for 40 years. It is shocking throughout, and is elevated by the masterful performances of Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara

#8 Don't look now (1973)

An older film, but a tenet of the horror genre whose influence can still be seen in today's films. It's more of psychological-thriller / horror. A couple morning the death of their daughter moves to Venice in an attempt to leave it all behind. However, a serial killer roams the streets...
